Nihilism. " God is dead, God remains dead, and we have killed him."
The word of the day is
Nihilism!
Nihilism!
described by Merriam-Webster as
A viewpoint that traditional values and beliefs are unfounded and that existence is senseless and useless
A viewpoint that traditional values and beliefs are unfounded and that existence is senseless and useless
This is one of the many things Bojack Horseman and Rick Sanchez have in common, Their shared nihilistic world view.
Each of these characters embodies a different version of the word though.
You might be wondering which is which
To that, I would respond using verbiage that I hear quite often,
stop asking so many damn questions.

Firstly
Cosmic Nihilism
Cosmic Nihilism
Essentially it can be summed up like this
Life as a whole has no meaning.
All things people believe in,
All things people believe in,
(ie: religion, love, even joy, and freedom)
is bullshit and the world doesn't owe anyone anything, let alone an explanation.
This pessimistic world view is something that Rick basically lives by and may be the cause for his utter recklessness in life.
If nothing he does ultimately matters why should he do anything except what he feels he wants to do.

A perfect quote to showcase Cosmic Nihilism is a scene where
Morty explains to his sister that shit went down in an alternate timeline and so he came to the one he is currently in and had to essentially kill and bury his self and then said,

Nobody exists on purpose.
Nobody belongs anywhere.
Everybody's gonna die.
Secondly
Existential Nihilism
Existential Nihilism
In contrast to Cosmic Nihilism, Existential Nihilism is the knowledge or realization that life has no inherent meaning so it is the individual's responsibility to
assign some meaning to their life.
Bojack is a perfect example of an existential nihilist which is evident through his efforts of trying to reach or assign some kind of meaning to his life whether it be through fame, riches, or relationships.
A quote from Jean-Paul Sartre to explain existentialism a little better.
Life has no meaning a priori…
It is up to you to give it a meaning,
and value is nothing but the meaning
that you choose.
Both of these Characters understand or believe that life is meaningless, but deal with it in different ways, you can either wallow in the fact that there's no point to life and everything is meaningless or you could do something about it and be responsible for your own happiness.
